So I don't get the love for a person who can't sing the role. But Gerard is just objectively bad on a technical level. Like i said it's not just preference (say Anthony Warlow doesn't really do it for me the way Karimloo does but his voice does at least fit the role he CAN sing it properly) that's preference.
So it doesn't make sense for the character to quote Musical Hell "sounds like a water buffalo with laringitis being strangled." I literally cringed any time he opened his mouth. He grew up IN an opera house surrounded by music and characters always talk about the beauty of his voice. He's called the Angel of Music for god's sake and as a voice that can put you into an almost hypnotic state. He's a prospector not a professional singer) but the Phantom no matter the version is a character completely defined by his gorgeous voice. It's one thing if the character is SUPPOSED to be a poor singer or they're not someone you'd expect to have a great voice (Aido Annie in Oklahoma or Ben Rumson in paint your wagon. I won't criticize the lack of variation in facial expression too hard considering the Sarah Brightman precident) he really is the worst offender.
It's honestly horrible casting and while I'm not a fan of Rossum either since she also can't exactly live up to the potential of the role (not bad just very generic and average like the voice you'd usually hear in a highschool production or a church choir if someone want's to explain that one as well I'd appreciate it. He yells a large portion of his lines and struggles to hit the more difficult notes. He objectively on a vocal level is not great. So first off not hating on anybody who DOES like him.īut I just can't understand how anyone who has heard the role sung properly (either the original cast recording or actually seen the stage musical, or the 25th anniversary) can possibly think his performance good.
